Photolysis of 2,2'-Dinitrodiphenylcarbinols in Neutral, Acidic and Basic Media
Photolysis of various substituted 2,2'-dinitrodiphenylcarbinols (1a-c) has been carried out in 2-propanol, acidified ethanol and triethylamine. 2-Nitro-2'-nitrosobenzophenones (2a-c) are the major products.Small amounts of 3-(2'-nitrophenyl)-2,1-benzisoxa

Photo-Rearrangement of 3-(2'-Nitrophenyl)-2,1-benzisoxazoles - An Example of Neighbouring Group Interaction of Photoexcited Nitro Group
3-(2'-Nitrophenyl)-2,1-benzisoxazole (2) when irradiated in acidic ethanol affords dibenzodiazepin-11-one-5-oxide (3) and acridone (4). 5-Methyl-3-(5'-methyl-2'-nitrophenyl)-2,1-benzisoxazoles (2d-h) and 5-methyl-3-(3'-methyl-2'-nitrophenyl)-2,1-benzisoxazoles (2i-k) are also found to rearrange into related N-oxides and acridones.A plausible mechanism is suggested for the photoreaction.
