Simple reaction conditions and recyclable reagents are crucial for environmentally friendly industrial applications. An environment-friendly, recyclable and economic strategy was developed to synthesize diaryl chalcogenides by the CuCl2-catalyzed C S bondformation reaction via iodobenzenes and benzenethiols/1,2-diphenyldisulfanes using N,N'-dimethylethane-1,2-diamine (DMEDA) as ligand, base, and solvent. For these reactions, especially the reactions of diiodobenzenes and aminobenzenethiols/disulfanediyldianilines, a range of substrates are compatible and give the corresponding products in good to excellent yields. Both of the reagents in the catalytic system (CuCl2/DMEDA) are inexpensive, conveniently separable, and recyclable for more than five cycles.

A methodology is reported for visible-light-promoted synthesis of unsymmetrical chalcogenides enabled by dimsyl anion in the absence of transition-metals or photoredox catalysts. The cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and diaryl dichalcogenides proceeds with electron-rich, electron-poor, and heteroaromatic moieties. Mechanistic investigations using UV-Vis spectroscopy, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations, and control reactions suggest that dimsyl anion forms an electron-donor-acceptor (EDA) complex capable of absorbing blue light, leading to a charge transfer responsible for generation of aryl radicals from aryl halides. This previously unreported mechanistic pathway may be applied to other light-induced transformations performed in DMSO in the presence of bases and aryl halides.

This work describes an electrochemical enabled nickel-catalyzed chemoselective C?S bond coupling protocol for the production of aryl sulfides and sulfones. By simply switching the nickel catalysts and electrodes, this electrochemical C?S bond coupling has demonstrated excellent redox activity, scalability and sustainability. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical cross-coupling reaction has been investigated.

A new approach to C?S couplings is reported that relies on nickel catalysis under mild conditions, enabled by micellar catalysis in recyclable water as the reaction medium. The protocol tolerates a wide range of heteroaromatic halides and thiols, including alkyl and heteroaryl thiols, leading to a variety of thioethers in good isolated yields. The method is scalable, results in low residual metal in the products, and is applicable to syntheses of targets in the pharmaceutical area. The procedure also features an associated low E Factor, suggesting a far more attractive entry than is otherwise currently available, especially those based on unsustainable loadings of Pd catalysts.

Ni-catalyzed C?S cross-coupling reactions have received less attention compared with other C-heteroatom couplings. Most reported examples comprise the thioetherification of most reactive aryl iodides with aromatic thiols. The use of C?O electrophiles in this context is almost uncharted. Here, we describe that preformed Ni(II) precatalysts of the type NiCl(allyl)(PMe2Ar’) (Ar’=terphenyl group) efficiently couple a wide range of (hetero)aryl halides, including challenging aryl chlorides, with a variety of aromatic and aliphatic thiols. Aryl and alkenyl tosylates are also well tolerated, demonstrating, for the first time, to be competent electrophilic partners in Ni-catalyzed C?S bond formation. The chemoselective functionalization of the C?I bond in the presence of a C?Cl bond allows for designing site-selective tandem C?S/C?N couplings. The formation of the two C-heteroatom bonds takes place in a single operation and represents a rare example of dual electrophile/nucleophile chemoselective process.

Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) have recently emerged as light-harvesting devices, as well as elegant heterogeneous catalysts. The combination of these two properties into a dual catalyst has not yet been explored. We report a new photosensitive triazine-based COF, decorated with single Ni sites to form a dual catalyst. This crystalline and highly porous catalyst shows excellent catalytic performance in the visible-light-driven catalytic sulfur–carbon cross-coupling reaction. Incorporation of single transition metal sites in a photosensitive COF scaffold with two-component synergistic catalyst in organic transformation is demonstrated for the first time.

Decarbonylative synthesis of thioethers from thioesters proceeds in the presence of a catalytic amount of [Rh(cod)Cl]2 (2 mol %). The protocol represents the first Rh-catalyzed decarbonylative thioetherification of thioesters to yield valuable thioethers. Notable features include the absence of phosphine ligands, inorganic bases, and other additives and excellent group tolerance to aryl chlorides and bromides that are problematic using other metals to promote decarbonylation. Gram scale synthesis, late-stage pharmaceutical derivatization, and orthogonal site-selective cross-couplings by C-S/C-Br cleavage are reported.

A mild and regioselective method for the preparation of unsymmetrical biaryl sulfides using iron(III) catalysis is described. Activation of N-(arylthio)succinimides using the powerful Lewis acid iron(III) triflimide allowed the efficient thiolation of a range of arenes, including anisoles, phenols, acetanilides, and N-heterocycles. The method was applicable for the late-stage thiolation of tyrosine and tryptophan derivatives and was used as the key step for the synthesis of pharmaceutically relevant biaryl sulfur-containing compounds such as the antibiotic dapsone and the antidepressant vortioxetine. Kinetic studies revealed that while N-(arylthio)succinimides bearing electron-deficient arenes underwent thioarylation catalyzed entirely by iron(III) triflimide, N-(arylthio)succinimides with electron-rich arenes displayed an autocatalytic mechanism promoted by the Lewis basic product.

We report the palladium-catalyzed double-decarbonylative synthesis of aryl thioethers by an aryl exchange reaction between amides and thioesters. In this method, amides serve as aryl donors and thioesters are sulfide donors, enabling the synthesis of valuable aryl sulfides. The use of Pd/Xantphos without any additives has been identified as the catalytic system promoting the aryl exchange by C(O)-N/C(O)-S cleavages. The method is amenable to a wide variety of amides and sulfides.

A Chan-Lam-Type C-S coupling reaction using sodium aryl sulfinates has been developed to provide diaryl thioethers in up to 92% yields in the presence of a copper catalyst and potassium sulfite. Both electron-rich and electron-poor sodium aryl sulfinates and diverse organoboron compounds were tolerated for the synthesis of aryl and heteroaryl thioethers and dithioethers. The mechanistic study suggested that potassium sulfite was involved in the deoxygenation of sulfinate through a radical process.

Silver(I) salts were found active in the borylation and sulfenylation of aryl iodides under visible light irradiation. The optimized borylation protocol using AgF did not need any additive, operated under very mild conditions, and well tolerated a broad scope of substrates and boron sources. Formation of Ag(0) single atoms (AgSAs) during the borylation reactions was examined using high-angle annular dark field aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF AC-STEM) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The activities of the silver(I) salts were affected by the anions and could be associated with their abilities in formation of AgSAs during the reactions. Kinetic studies showed that the deiodination rate was linearly correlated with the loading of AgSAs, and hence AgSAs were the true catalytic centers for the 1e?-reduction of the C-I moieties. The oxidation state of AgSAs kept 0 in both the resting and the working states. A “work-in-tandem” mechanism involving AgSAs as the catalytic centers and AgNPs as the light absorber to achieve the borylation of aryl iodides under visible light irradiation is proposed. The current approach not only provides an alternative system for borylation and sulfenylation of aryl iodides, but also reveals a new activity of silver(I) salts involving AgSAs under visible light irradiation.

We have developed an eco-friendly and chemo-selective photocatalytic synthesis of sulfoxides or sulfones via oxidation of sulfides (thioethers) at ambient temperature using air or O2 as the oxidant. An inexpensive thioxanthone was used as the photocatalyst. Our method offers excellent chemical yields and good functional group tolerance. The hydrogen bonding between hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP) and sulfoxides may play an important role in minimizing the over-oxidization of sulfoxides.

We describe a practical protocol for efficiently preparing diaryl sulfide compounds using Cu–OMS-2 as the catalyst. Cu–OMS-2 originates from manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieves modified with copper ions and catalyzes the C–S coupling reaction of substituted thiophenols and aryl halides. This protocol has the advantages of environmental friendliness, simple operation, high yields, good tolerance of functional groups, and the Cu–OMS-2 catalytic material can be recycled several times.

Porous organic materials (polymers and COFs) have shown a number of promising properties; however, the lability of their linkages often limits their robustness and can hamper downstream industrial application. Inspired by the outstanding chemical, mechanical, and thermal resistance of the 1D polymer poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS), we have designed a new family of porous poly(aryl thioether)s, synthesized via a mild Pd-catalyzed C–S/C–S metathesis-based method, that merges the attractive features common to porous polymers and PPS in a single material. In addition, the method is highly modular, allowing to easily introduce application-oriented functionalities in the materials for a series of environmentally relevant applications including metal capture, metal sensing, and heterogeneous catalysis. Moreover, despite their extreme chemical resistance, the polymers can be easily recycled to recover the original monomers, offering an attractive perspective for their sustainable use. In a broader context, these results clearly demonstrate the untapped potential of emerging single-bond metathesis reactions in the preparation of new, recyclable materials.

The invention discloses an aryl thioether compound and a synthesis method thereof, wherein an aryl carboxylic acid and a mercaptan (phenol) are used as main raw materials, and a nickel catalyst is prepared. Under the action of the phosphine ligand and the additive, the aryl carboxylic acid and the thiol (phenol) react in an organic solvent, and after the reaction is finished, the corresponding aryl thioether is obtained. The method has the advantages of low cost, high yield, simple and convenient operation, no pollution and the like, and has potential industrial application prospects. The method provides a cheap and green way for preparation of aryl thioether compounds.

A nickel-catalyzed decarbonylation of carboxylic acids cross-coupling protocol has been developed for the straightforward C?S(Se) bond formation. This reaction is promoted by a commercially-available, user-friendly, inexpensive, air and moisture-stable nickel precatalyst. Various carboxylic acids and a wide range of aryl dichalcogenide substrates were tolerated in this process which afforded products in good to excellent yields. In addition, the present reaction can be conducted on gram scale in good yield.

A cost effective and easily available CuI/DABCO catalytic system has been developed for the C–S cross-coupling reaction. This method is extremely useful for the thioetherification of aryl and heteroaryl halides, providing excellent yields and good chemoselectivity. We have also explored the mechanism of the reaction using DFT studies.

An amide-imine conjugate, (E)-N′-((2-hydroxybenzen-1-yl) methylene)-4-methylbenzohydrazide (H2LPTASAL), derived from 4-methyl-benzoic acid hydrazide (PTA) and 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde is used to prepare Mo (VI), Cu (II) and Fe (III) complexes. The X-ray structurally characterized complexes have been explored as catalyst for amine assisted asymmetric ring opening (ARO) of epoxide, carbon-heteroatom cross-coupling and ethyl benzene oxidation. In addition, their catecholase like activities have thoroughly been investigated. Moreover, the Cu (II) complex selectively recognizes histidine by fluorescence spectroscopy.

Many reactions catalyzed by Pd complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands are performed in the presence of amines which usually act as coupling reagents or mild bases. However, amines can react with Pd/NHC complexes in a number of ways: enhancing molecular catalysis, causing the catalyst deactivation or triggering the ligandless modes of catalysis by producing NHC-free active palladium species. This study gains insight into conditions required for the efficient use of amines as activators of molecular Pd/NHC catalysis and preventing the undesirable reductive cleavage of the Pd-NHC bond in catalytic systems. Reactions of Pd/NHC complexes with various amines within a temperature range of 25-140 °C and thermal stability of the resulting amino-complexes are examined. The results indicate the major influence of the amine structure and reaction temperature on the catalyst transformation. In particular, thermal decomposition of Pd/NHC complexes with aliphatic amine ligands predominantly leads to reductive Pd-NHC bond cleavage, while deprotonation of the complexes with primary and secondary aliphatic amine ligands in the presence of strong bases at 25-60 °C promotes the activation of molecular Pd/NHC catalysis. Efficient Pd-PEPPSI complex-amine systems suitable for strong-base-promoted C-S cross-coupling reactions between aryl halides and thiols are suggested on the basis of these findings.

Background: There are a number of protocols for Ullmann coupling–type S-arylation reactions, many of them suffer from the use of homogenous and often corrosive catalyst, cumbersome workup procedures, and long reaction times. Besides, many of these reagents are expensive and non-recoverable, leading to the generation of a large amount of toxic waste particularly when large-scale applications are considered. Objective: The aim of this study was to prepare a new Pd catalyst bonded on the surface of zeolite as a heterogeneous catalyst. Methods: A heterogeneous palladium catalyst has been prepared by immobilizing Pd ions on Clinoptilolite. This novel developed heterogeneous catalyst was thoroughly examined for Ullmann coupling–type S-arylation reaction using different bases, solvents and 0.003 mg of the catalyst. The structural and morphological characterizations of the catalyst were carried out using XRD, TGA, BET and TEM techniques. Results: Highly efficient heterogeneous palladium catalyst has been developed by immobilizing Pd ions on Clinoptilolite, as one of the most abundant naturally occurring zeolites for Ullmann S-arylation. By using this method, we provide an efficient way to a wide variety of substituted thiolic compounds. Moreover, the catalyst is easily recovered using simple filtration and reused for 5 consecutive runs. Conclusion: In this effort, we developed a new Pd catalyst bonded on the surface of zeolite as a substrate to prepare the heterogeneous catalyst. We demonstrate that this novel catalyst offers reliable and convincing data that may offer a valuable application in further developing the science and technology of Ullmann reaction protocols and allied industries. Additionally, the catalyst was reusable and kept its high activities over a number of cycles.

An operationally simple mechanochemical C-S coupling of aryl halides with thiols has been developed. The reaction process operates under benchtop conditions without the requirement for a (dry) solvent, an inert atmosphere, or catalyst preactivation. The reaction is finished within 3 h. The reaction is demonstrated across a broad range of substrates; the inclusion of zinc metal has been found to be critical in some instances, especially for coupling of alkyl thiols.

The invention relates to a palladium complex containing a meta-position carborane triazole ligand and a preparation method and application of the palladium complex. The palladium complex is prepared by the following steps: (1) dropwise adding an n-BuLi solution into a meta-position carborane m-C2B10H12 solution, carrying out stirring and reacting, then adding 3-propargyl bromide for a reaction again, and after the reaction is finished, carrying out separating to obtain 1,3-dipropargyl meta-carborane; and (2) under the catalytic condition of a catalyst CuI, carrying out a reaction on 1,3-dipropargyl meta-carborane and aryl azide, then adding PdCl2 into a reaction system, continuing the reaction, and after the reaction is finished, carrying out separation to obtain the palladium complex containing the meta-carborane triazole ligand. Compared with the prior art, the preparation method provided by the invention is simple and green; the complex can efficiently catalyze a coupling reaction of mercaptan and halogenated hydrocarbon to synthesize thioether compounds; reaction conditions are mild, substrate universality is good, catalytic efficiency is high, and few byproducts are produced;and the catalyst has high stability and is not sensitive to air and water.

CuII catalyst is less efficient at room temperature for C?S cross-coupling. C?S cross-coupling by CuII catalyst at room temperature is not reported; however, doping of copper with molybdenum metal has been realized here to be more efficient for C?S cross-coupling in comparison to general CuII catalyst. The doped catalyst CuMoO4 nanoparticle is found to be more efficient than copper. The catalyst works under mild conditions without any ligand at room temperature and is recyclable and effective for a wide range of thiols and haloarenes (ArI, ArBr, ArF) from milligram to gram scale. The copper-based bimetallic catalyst is developed and recognized for C?S cross-coupling of haloarenes with alkyl and aryl thiols.

We disclosed new bimetallic BaMoO4 nanoparticles for the C-S cross-coupling reaction. The C-S cross-coupling reaction of alkyl/aryl thiols with haloarenes was accomplished with high yields. The reaction has good functional group tolerance and selectivity. This is an efficient protocol for synthesizing the building blocks of pharmaceuticals containing C-S bonds. The catalyst is recyclable. The unactivated bromo- and 4-acetyl fluoro-arenes can well couple to afford thioethers in high yields. The reaction is believed to proceed by oxidative addition and reductive elimination.

A mild, scalable iodine-mediated oxidative cross-coupling reaction of arylhydrazines and thiols for construction of thioethers (sulfides) in the absence of any transition metals or photocatalysts is disclosed. A variety of unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides with broad substrate scope both on thiols and hydrazines were synthesized in high yields in water at room temperature. Furthermore, to demonstrate the utility of the protocol, the above C-S bond formation was applied in the synthesis of the key structure of vortioxetine as an antidepressant drug. The gram-scale outcome also added to the potential utility of this protocol.

In the present report, an environmentally benign magnetically recoverable nickel(ii)-based nanoreactor as a heterogeneous catalyst has been developedviaa template free approach. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalyst is assessed in the confined oxidative coupling of arenethiols with arylhydrazines to form unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides under aerobic conditions. The salient features of our protocol include oxidant- and ligand-free conditions, use of water as a green solvent, room temperature and formation of nitrogen and water as the only by-products. Moreover, a broad range of functional groups are tolerated well and provide the corresponding diaryl sulfides in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of the catalyst permits facile magnetic recovery and reusability for up to seven runs, making the present protocol highly desirable from industrial and environmental standpoints.

An application for dechalcogenization of aryl dichalcogenides via copper catalysis to synthesize aryl chalcogenides is disclosed. This approach is highlighted by the practical conditions, broad substrate scope, and good functional group tolerance with several sensitive groups such as aldehyde, ketone, ester, amide, cyanide, alkene, nitro, and methylsulfonyl. Furthermore, the robustness of this methodology is depicted by the late-stage modification of estrone and synthesis of vortioxetine. Remarkably, synthesis of more challenging organic materials with large ring tension under milder conditions and synthesis of some halogen contained diaryl sulfides which could not be synthesized using metal-catalyzed coupling reactions of aryl halogen are successfully accomplished with this protocol.

A CuI-catalyzed direct coupling of aryl boronic acids with arylsulfonyl chlorides for the preparation of diaryl thioethers was developed. The reaction is initiated by a PPh3 reduction of the arylsulfonyl chloride, followed by a CuI-catalyzed C–S coupling with an aryl boronic acid. Various arylsulfonyl chlorides can directly serve as a sulfur source in this mild and efficient reaction giving the desired products in moderate to good yields. Moreover, this practical method has also been applied to the thioetherification of aryl iodides and acetylacetones.

Abstract: Diaryl sulfides have been synthesized in moderate to excellent yield by S-arylation of arenethiols with arylboronic acids using copper slag as a catalyst. Copper slag is a by-product obtained from smelting and refining of copper. Conventional heating method has been compared with the microwave-assisted technique. The proposed microwave-assisted synthesis provides excellent yields of diaryl sulfides in a short time (10 min) and is ligand-free, green, and cost-effective.

A NiCl2/2,2′-bipyridine-catalyzed cross-coupling of thiophenols with arylboronic acids has been developed for the synthesis of symmetric and unsymmetric diarylsulfides at room temperature and in air. This methodology is reliable and offers a mild and easy to operate process for the synthesis of arylthioethers, which are essential compounds with applications in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. This method avoids the use of expensive transition metals, such as Pd, Ir or Rh, sophisticated ligands and elevated temperatures. It also has a wide substrate scope (55 examples) and provides products in good to excellent yields (72-93%).

Benzoylhydrazine based Schiff base-ligated two new copper(II) complexes, [Cu(L1)2] (1) and [Cu(L2)2] (2) were synthesized by the reaction of Cu(CH3COO)2·H2O with respective Schiff base ligand 1-[(4-nitrophenyl)ethylidene] benzohydrazide (HL1) or 1-[(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylidene] benzohydrazide (HL2). Both complexes were isolated as greenish solid and fully characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, EPR, thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis and Cyclic Voltammetry. The molecular structures of both complexes have also been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallography, which confirmed the coordination of Schiff base ligands through N, O donor atoms and distorted square planar geometry around the Cu(II) ion. Both complexes were found to be good homogeneous catalysts for the synthesis of a wide range of substituted thioethers and 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles in 92% and 93% yield, respectively, at a low catalyst loading (0.5 mol%). The bond angles and distances, as discerned from the DFT calculations, commusurated with the experimental findings. The energy difference between the HOMO and the LUMO, calculated from DFT studies, was found to be 5.645 eV and 6.459 eV for complex 1 and complex 2, respectively. These results are in harmony with the observed higher catalytic activity of complex 1.

A novel mechanically stable supramolecular Co(ii)-metallohydrogel has been synthesized. Cobalt(ii) nitrate hexahydrate and monoethanolamine, as a low molecular weight organic gelator, are used to get the gel. The mechanical stability of the supramolecular hydrogel was analyzed. The morphology of the supramolecular metallohydrogel was scrutinized. The semiconducting features of the metallohydrogel were studied. The conducting properties of the Co(ii)-metallohydrogel establish a Schottky barrier diode type nature. The catalytic nature of the Co(ii)-metallohydrogel based room temperature single pot aryl-S coupling reaction was explored. Most interestingly, the Co(ii)-metallohydrogel based catalytic aryl-S coupling reaction does not require any column-chromatographic purification protocol to get pure aryl-thioethers. Thus, through this work a semiconducting Schottky barrier diode application and catalytic role in the room temperature single pot aryl-S coupling reaction of a supramolecular Co(ii)-metallohydrogel have been explored.

A simple and efficient approach of C-S cross-coupling of a wide variety of (hetero)aryl thiols and (hetero)aryl halides under mild conditions, mostly at room temperature, catalyzed by well-defined singlet diradical Ni(II) catalysts bearing redox noninnocent ligands is reported. Taking advantage of ligand centered redox events, the high-energetic Ni(0)/Ni(II) or Ni(I)/Ni(III) redox steps were avoided in the catalytic cycle. The cooperative participation of both nickel and the coordinated ligands during oxidative addition/reductive elimination steps allowed us to perform the catalytic reactions under mild conditions.

In this work, we report a simple and versatile method for the modification of a metal-organic framework (NH2-MIL53(Al)) in a step-wise manner. To characterize the synthesized nanostructured catalyst, a variety of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including FT-IR, XRD, BET, TEM, FE-SEM, EDX, EDX-mapping, TGA, XPS, VSM, ICP-OES and CHN have been employed. Fe3O4@AMCA-MIL53(Al)-NH2-CoII NPs, which benefit from small nanocrystalline size (10-30 nm, according to the XRD and TEM data) in combination with the coexistence of magnetic nanoparticles, a metal-organic framework, and cobalt species, were found to be an excellent environment catalyst to promote the C-N and C-S cross coupling reactions. A wide range of functional substrates including electron-withdrawing and electron-donating aryl halides underwent the coupling reaction with aromatic/heteroaromatic/benzylic and aliphatic amines and sulfides. The results demonstrated that the yields of the target products were good to excellent and the catalyst can be recycled for at least seven recycling runs without a discernible decrease in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, the heterogeneity studies (such as hot filtration and poisoning tests) efficiently confirmed that the as-synthesized nanostructured catalyst is heterogeneous and completely stable under the reaction conditions. We hope that our study inspires more interest in designing novel catalysts based on using low-cost metal ions (such as cobalt) in the field of cross coupling reactions.

In the present study, biosynthesis of CuO nanoparticles using a rapid, eco-friendly, cost-effective and efficient method has been reported employing aqueous Euphorbia maculata extract as mild, renewable and non-toxic reducing and capping agents without adding any surfactants. The biogenic and green method has some benefits compared to conventional physical and chemical methods. It is simple, cheap and environmentally friendly. The biosynthesized CuO NP displayed a color change pattern (from sky blue to black) on preparation and presented its respective broad peak at 365?nm, which was analyzed by UV–Vis spectroscopy. Using the FT-IR analysis, biomolecules in E. maculata extract which are responsible for bioreduction activity and synthesize of CuO NP, were identified. The XRD, EDX and FESEM results confirmed the successful synthesis of CuO nanoparticles of 18?nm sizes, with spherical and sponge crystal structure. The catalytic activity of biosynthesized CuO NPs was studied in C-S cross-coupling reaction. This method has the advantages of high yields, easy work-up, and simple reusability. The recovered CuO NP can be reused four times without any considerable loss of its catalytic activity.

One of the most straightforward methods for the synthesis of diaryl sulfides is the transition metal catalyzed C–S coupling reaction. Herein we report a study on the iron-catalyzed protocol for cross-coupling reaction of aryl halides with thiols. Structurally diverse diaryl sulfides were prepared efficiently by using a catalyst system involving cheap and environment-friendly FeCl3 and non-toxic universal ligand L-proline. The reaction mechanism for the iron-catalyzed C–S coupling reaction was investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT) methods on a model system. The calculations were performed using hybrid PBE1PBE functional in conjugation with the LANL-2DZ basis set. The key step involved in the mechanism is the formation of a reactant complex in which both reactants are electrostatically bound to Fe(III) proline complex catalyst. The elimination of HI occurs with a much lower TS energy (20.0 kcal/mol) than the uncatalyzed reaction (44.7 kcal/mol).

We describe herein the use of arylselanylpyrazole–copper complexes as versatile catalysts for C–Se and C–S coupling reactions. The performance of these complexes for C–Se reactions was investigated in chalcogenoacetylene synthesis. The reactions were carried out under mild and aerobic conditions and afforded selanylalkynes bearing a variety of electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups. The performance of these catalysts for C–S coupling was investigated through the reaction of aryl halides with thiols and products were obtained in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible mechanism for selenoacetylene synthesis is also suggested, and the 77Se NMR results show that these arylselanylpyrazole ligands act as hemilabile ligands. High-resolution mass spectrometry was used to investigate the intermediates and also to corroborate the proposed catalytic cycle.

A general and efficient Ni-catalyzed coupling of challenging aryl chlorides and in situ generated aliphatic and aromatic thiolates is described. The employed on-cycle, air-stable defined Ni precatalysts allow for transformation of a broad scope of substrates. A variety of functional groups and heterocyclic motifs as well as structurally varied thiols are tolerated at unprecedented moderate catalyst loadings and reaction temperatures. Depending on reaction conditions, aryl thiols can selectively undergo C-S or C-C couplings.

We reported the synthesis of copper (I)-selenophene-2-carboxylate (CuSC) and application as new catalyst in the cross-coupling reactions of thiols with aryl iodide to afford the corresponding unsymmetrical thioethers. The optimized reaction conditions were applied to thiols and aryl iodides having a wide range of functional groups, including electron rich and electron poor substrates. The chemoselectivity of the reaction with 4-iodobromobenzene and 2-aminothiophenol derivatives was briefly examined through the competitive iodine versus bromine and thiol versus nitrogen cross-coupling.

An efficient method for the synthesis of unsymmetrical diaryl sulfides has been developed by the C-S cross coupling of aryldithiocarbamates and aryldiazonium salts in the presence of CuI-2,2′-bipyridine and Zn. Aryldithiocarbamate compounds have been used here as thiol substitutes. The protocol shows wide substrate scope and good yields of the products.

A nickel-catalyzed decarbonylation or decarbonylation accompanied by decarboxylation cross-coupling reaction of aryl anhydrides with thiophenols as coupling partners was disclosed. This method is promoted by a commercially available, moisture-stable, and inexpensive nickel(II) precatalyst. The process can tolerate a variety of functional groups using ubiquitous aryl anhydrides as cross-coupling precursors to produce thioethers in moderate to excellent yields.

The invention provides a mild synthesis method for diaryl sulfide. The method comprises the following steps: sulfonyl chloride used as a reaction substrate is reduced by triphenylphosphine to form a disulfide intermediate; and the disulfide intermediate and boric acid undergo a coupling reaction for 2-4 h under the catalysis of a copper-phenanthroline ligand compound with potassium carbonate as abase in order to prepare a sulfide derivative in a high yield. In the present invention, the sulfide derivative is simply and efficiently synthesized from sulfonyl chloride and boric acid through copper catalysis and triphenylphosphine reduction, and the sulfur atom of the product is derived from the sulfonyl chloride. Compared with thiophenol, the raw material sulfonyl chloride has the advantagesof no unpleasant odor, greenness, and easy availability. The aryl boronic acid has stable properties, is convenient to operate, can be easily obtained, and has a low price. The method has the advantages of simplicity in reaction operation, high product yield, and avoiding of the disadvantages of air pollution, high temperature and too long reaction time.

Visible-light-promoted sulfidation and phosphorylation of arylhydrazines for the synthesis of aromatic sulfides and diarylphosphoryl hydrazides were developed using the organic dyes rose bengal and Na2-eosin Y as photocatalysts, respectively. This strategy offers an efficient and mild transition-metal-free synthetic protocol for the formation of C-S and N-P bonds from arylhydrazines.

A series of PEG-functionalized nitrogen ligands were developed to conduct an aerobic oxidative cross-coupling reaction between alkyl- or aryl-hydrazines with thiols in water. This surfactant-type catalyst enables high efficiencies and selectivities, while tolerating a large variety of functional groups. The mother liquor is still catalytically active after five runs.

Aiming at problems that in the prior art organic solvent pollution can be caused and a great number of reaction byproducts are generated when asymmetric sulfides are prepared, the invention disclosesa method for synthesizing an asymmetric sulfide from a molecular oxygen oxidation water phase under catalysis of a water-soluble transition metal compound. The method comprises the following steps: dispersing a sulfydryl compound and a hydrazine compound as substrates in a mole ratio of 1:1 into an alkali solution, and at 40-100 DEG C, in the presence of oxygen, and with a water-soluble transitionmetal compound as a catalyst, stirring to carry out reactions, thereby obtaining the asymmetric sulfide. By adopting the method, molecular oxygen is adopted as an oxidant, and water is adopted as a solvent, so that an organic solvent is avoided, a high yield can be achieved, and the problem of byproducts can be generally avoided.

In this study, a general procedure was proposed for synthesizing thioethers and selenide ethers from anilines under solvent-free and transition-metal-free conditions. Thioethers were formed when anilines reacted with thiols under blue light-emitting-diode (LED) irradiation at room temperature without a photocatalyst. When reactions were performed using anilines and diselenides, the corresponding selenide ethers were obtained with satisfactory to excellent yields. The reaction was performed under photocatalyst-free and solvent-free conditions without blue LEDs. The advantages of this system include convenient operations, mild reaction conditions, satisfactory functional group tolerance, and late-stage selenylation of drug molecules.

An operationally simple electrochemical method for the transition-metal-free ipso-thiocyanation of arylboronic acids and aryl trifluoroborates has been developed. The SCN electrophile is generated in situ by anodic oxidation of thiocyanate anions, which avoids formation of salt waste and prevents unwanted side reactions arising from chemical oxidants. The reaction proceeds regiospecifically, and the scope extends to non-activated aromatic systems. (Figure presented.).
