- Synthesis of bifunctional hydroxamic acids as novel ligands for the hydrophilic stabilization of iron oxide nanoparticles
-
A general method for synthesizing bifunctional hydroxamic acids containing carboxylic acid or amino functionalities is reported. Various products from simple alkyl to complex dendrimer-like structures are described. Such molecules have recently been used in ligand-exchange reactions for the hydrophilic stabilization of originally oleic acid protected iron oxide nanoparticles. - Nonionic Amphiphilic Compounds from Lysine as Molecular Mimics of Lecithins
-
New monodisperse nonionic surfactant molecules, based on lysine with two fatty acid chains in the hydrophobic part and one or two polyoxoethylene methoxycapped chains (EOn-Me) in the hydrophilic headgroup, are synthesized as mimics of natural lecithins.Their surface-activity properties indicate that these compounds have surfactant behavior whose global hydrophobic contribution is comparable to that of one fatty chain. - Key Words: Amphiphilic compounds; critical micelle concentration; mimics of lecithins; surface tension

- Monodisperse perfluoro-polyethoxylated amphiphilic compounds with two-chain polar head - Preparation and properties
-
Monodisperse new surfactant molecules with a two-chain polyoxyethylene (EO) hydrophilic head and a perfluoroalkyl hydrophobic moiety linked together through an amide bond are synthesized by methods allowing large-scale production. Surface tension measurements (γ ~ 20 mN·m-1) show slow organization of the surfactant film at the water/air interface for longer fluorocarbon tail. Values of critical micellar concentrations and comparisons with monosubstituted amide surfactants are consistent with a high hydrophilicity of the amide function, a small influence of branching over hydrophilicity, and a hydrophobicity of each CF2 unit equivalent to 1.7 methylenes (in the analogous hydrogenated surfactants).

- Tris(polyoxaalkyl)amines (Trident), a New Class of Solid-Liquid Phase-Transfer Catalysts
-
A new class of solid-liquid phase-transfer catalysts has been prepared. These tris(polyoxaalkyl)amines (I) are designed to obtain the best balance between straightforward synthesis (cheap starting materials), high activity, easy recovery, and low toxicity. The catalysts are synthesized from ethylene glycols by a simple one-step method in yields in the range of 65-81percent.They show high catalytic effects in aliphatic nucleophic substitutions and aromatic nucleophilic substitutions on activated and unactivated molecules. In the Ullman synthesis (a new PTC reaction) there is a synergic effect of anionic activation by tridents and by copper salts.Reactions have been carried out at temperatures up to 180 deg C without evidence of decomposition of the tris(polyoxaalkyl)amines. The behavior and catalytic activity of these catalysts are discussed.
