- CuFe2O4@PDA magnetic nanomaterials with a core-shell structure: Synthesis and catalytic application in the degradation of methylene blue in water

In this paper, core-shell polydopamine (PDA)-encapsulated CuFe2O4 (CuFe2O4@PDA) magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were synthesized through in situ self-polymerization for the first time. The size of the core-shell product can be controlled by tuning the dopamine monomer concentration. The formation of a PDA layer effectively enhanced the catalytic performance and provided a large specific surface area which offered more active sites for the effective interaction. The as-synthesized CuFe2O4@PDA MNPs were characterized and their catalytic activity was evaluated using the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in the presence of H2O2 as a model reaction. The experimental results showed that MB could be degraded efficiently using CuFe2O4@PDA MNPs as a catalyst. Under the optimized conditions, the degradation efficiency of MB was above 97%. Furthermore, a possible reaction mechanism was discussed. Finally, the catalyst was used for effective degradation of MB in a Yellow River water sample, which indicates its potential for practical applications in water pollutant removal and environmental remediation.

Functionalized fluorine containing phthalocyanine molecules, methods of making, and methods of use in diagnostic applications and disease treatment are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, the fluorine containing phthalocyanine molecules are functionalized with a reactive functional group or at least one cancer-targeting ligand (CTL). The CTL can facilitate more efficient binding and/or internalization to a cancer cell than to a healthy cell. The CTL can inhibit expression of oncoprotein in some embodiments. The pthalocyanine moiety can be used in diagnostic applications, such as fluorescence labeling of a cancer cell, and/or treatment applications, such as catalyzing formation of a reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can contribute to cell death of a cancer cell.

The substrate scope of three mutants of phenylalanine dehydrogenase as biocatalysts for the transformation of a series of 2-oxo acids, structurally related to phenylpyruvic acid, to the analogous -amino acids, non-natural analogues of phenylalanine, has been investigated. The mutant enzymes are more tolerant than the wild type enzyme of the non-natural substrates, especially those with substituents at the 4-position on the phenyl ring. Excellent enantiocontrol resulted in all cases.

- Effects of grinding and humidification on the transformation of conglomerate to racemic compound in optically active drugs

The effects of grinding and humidification on the transformation of conglomerate to racemic compound have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XPD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy for leucine, norleucine, valine, serine, tartaric acid and malic acid. Racemic physical mixtures were prepared by physical mixing of equimolar quantities of D and L crystals using a mortar and pestle. Ground mixtures were obtained by grinding the physical mixtures with a vibrational mill. Humidification was performed by storing the physical mixtures and the ground mixtures in a desiccator containing saturated aqueous salt solutions at 40(o)C. When physical mixtures of malic acid, tartaric acid and serine were ground, the XPD peaks of the racemic compounds were observed. The XPD patterns of humidified physical mixtures of these compounds also showed the formation of the racemic compounds. This indicated that grinding or humidification of malic acid, tartaric acid and serine induced the transformation of conglomerate to racemic compound crystals. When, on the other hand, the physical mixtures of valine, leucine and norleucine were ground, peaks of racemic compounds were not detected in the XPD pattern. After humidification of the ground mixtures of valine, leucine and norleucine, however, the XPD peaks of racemic compounds were observed. DSC and IR studies revealed consistent results. We concluded that grinding or humidification of malic acid, tartaric acid and serine could induce the transformation of a conglomerate to racemic compound. In contrast, humidifying after grinding was needed to bring about the transformation in leucine, norleucine and valine.

Trifluoroacetamide 1 is alkylated in good yields (77-83%) by tert-butyl 2-bromocarboxylates 3 under solid-liquid phase transfer catalysis (PTC) conditions [anhydrous K2CO3, triethyl(benzyl)ammonium chloride (TEBA; 10%), MeCN, 80°C]. The resulting tert-butyl 2-(trifluoroacetylamino) carboxylates 5 are chemoselectively hydrolysed in 75-95% yields to the corresponding tert-butyl 2-amino carboxylates, isolated as hydrochlorides 8, under liquid-liquid PTC conditions [CH2Cl2 or Et2O, aqueous 20% KOH, TEBA (10%), 25-40°C].
