The reaction of methyl trifluoropyruvate with malonic acid derivatives leads to the formation of α-trifluoromethylmalic esters.The action of phosphorus pentoxide on monomethyl α-trifluoromethylmalate leads to the production of trifluoromethylmaleic anhydride through the formation of 3-trifluoromethyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-β-propiolactone.
