- Conjugated bis and poly(dioxaborole)s for optical sensing of Lewis bases based on main-chain perturbations
-
Fluorene-based bis(dioxaborole)s and a poly(dioxaborole) were used to optically detect Lewis bases. Studies of the binding mechanism and signal transduction indicated that the response from these dioxaboroles was sensitive, reversible and cross-reactive. The polymer exhibited enhanced response due to extended conjugation through the dioxaboroles.

- Catalytic Azoarene Synthesis from Aryl Azides Enabled by a Dinuclear Ni Complex
-
Azoarenes are valuable chromophores that have been extensively incorporated as photoswitchable elements in molecular machines and biologically active compounds. Here, we report a catalytic nitrene dimerization reaction that provides access to structurally and electronically diverse azoarenes. The reaction utilizes aryl azides as nitrene precursors and generates only gaseous N2 as a byproduct. By circumventing the use of a stoichiometric redox reagent, a broad range of organic functional groups are tolerated, and common byproducts of current methods are avoided. A catalyst featuring a Ni - Ni bond is found to be uniquely effective relative to those containing only a single Ni center. The mechanistic origins of this nuclearity effect are described.

- Influence of Polymer Electronics on Selective Dispersion of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes
-
The separation and isolation of semiconducting and metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) on a large scale remains a barrier to many commercial applications. Selective extraction of semiconducting SWNTs by wrapping and dispersion with conjugated polymers has been demonstrated to be effective, but the structural parameters of conjugated polymers that dictate selectivity are poorly understood. Here, we report nanotube dispersions with a poly(fluorene-co-pyridine) copolymer and its cationic methylated derivative, and show that electron-deficient conjugated π-systems bias the dispersion selectivity toward metallic SWNTs. Differentiation of semiconducting and metallic SWNT populations was carried out by a combination of UV/Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and electrical conductivity measurements. These results provide new insight into the rational design of conjugated polymers for the selective dispersion of metallic SWNTs.

- Effect of Induction on the Dispersion of Semiconducting and Metallic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Conjugated Polymers
-
Despite significant advances in single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) synthesis and purification strategies, the separation of metallic and semiconducting SWNTs on a large scale remains a barrier to the realization of many commercial applications. Selective extraction of specific SWNT types by wrapping and dispersion with conjugated polymers has been found effective for semiconducting SWNTs, but structural parameters that dictate selectivity are poorly understood. Here, we report nanotube dispersions with two structurally similar conjugated copolymers, both being poly(fluorene-co-phenylene) derivatives, having comparable degrees of polymerization but differing in the extent of electron donation from functional groups on the phenylene comonomers. It is found that copolymers decorated with electron donating methoxy functionalities lead to predominant dispersion of semiconducting SWNTs, while copolymers decorated with electron withdrawing nitro functionalities bias the dispersion toward metallic SWNTs. Differentiation of semiconducting and metallic SWNT populations was carried out by a combination of UV-vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy using multiple excitation wavelengths, and fluorescence spectroscopy. These results provide new insight into polymer design features that dictate preferential dispersion of specific SWNT types.

- Polymer library comprising fluorene and carbazole homo- and copolymers for selective single-walled carbon nanotubes extraction
-
To date, (n, m) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) cannot be selectively synthesized. Therefore, postprocessing of SWNTs including solubilization and sorting is necessary for further applications. Toward this goal, we have synthesized a polymer library consisting of fluorene- and carbazole-based homo- and copolymers. Variations of the connection of these aromatics together with the incorporation of further conjugated monomers give access to a broad diversity of polymers. Their ability to selectively wrap specific (n, m) species is investigated toward HiPco SWNTs raw material which contains more than 40 (n, m) species. Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies were used to analyze SWNTs/polymer suspensions. These results provide evidence for selective SWNTs/polymer interactions and allow a more detailed assessment of polymer structure-property relationships, thus paving the way toward custom synthesis of polymers for single (n, m) SWNTs extraction.
