1,2-dimethylindole (1) reacts in the presence of AlCl3 with malonyl dichloride to give the hydroxyazapseudophenalenone 2, with propiolactone to give the acid 3, which as an acid chloride under the conditions of Friedel-Crafts reaction yields the ketone 5.
