- A practical and cost-efficient, one-pot conversion of aldehydes into nitriles mediated by 'activated DMSO'
-
Participation of activated DMSO in the one-pot transformation of aldehydes to nitriles has been described by reacting aldehydes with NHHHCl in DMSO in the absence of any added base or catalyst. The method is applicable to access a wide range of aromatic, heterocyclic, and aliphatic nitriles, in which only water is a byproduct. A straightforward and practical procedure is demonstrated on a multigram scale. Georg Thieme Verlag Stuttgart - New York.

- Method of lowering intraocular pressure using phenylimino-imidazoles
-
A method is provided of treating glaucoma in a patient which comprises administering, preferably as eye drops, an effective amount of the compound STR1 which is preferably in the form of its hydrochloride. The compound is administered preferably in the form of a sterile pharmacologically acceptable solution which contains from 0.1 to 5, and more preferably 0.1 to 2.0, percent by weight of said compound. The patient preferably obtains the anti-glaucoma agent in the form of a kit which comprises the sterile pharmacologically acceptable solution and an eyedropper for dispensing said sterile pharmacologically acceptable solution to the affected eyes of a patient suffering from glaucoma.

- Succinimido azo dyestuffs
-
The invention relates to water-insoluble azo dyestuffs of the formula SPC1 In which A represents the residue of a diazo component of the azobenzene series, R1 a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group which may be substituted which may be substituted, R2 an alkyl group which may be substituted, R3 represents a divalent organic residue which together with the grouping EQU1 may form a 5- to 7-membered heterocycle, and X represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, aryloxy or arylmercapto group. The dyestuffs dye polyester fibre in orange, red or blue shades with good fastness: the use of such succinimido containing azo dyestuffs in imparting blue to red color to fibers or fabrics of wool, cellulose triacetate, polyamides and polyesters. The dyeings display excellent fastness to light, sublimation and abrasion on polyester fibers.
