- A Convenient Synthesis of 2-Methylheptadecane, the Tiger Moth Pheromone from Aleuritic Acid
-
2-Methylheptadecane has been synthesised starting from threo-aleuritic acid. The key steps are: (i) formation of a C16-aldehyde; (ii) a Grignard reaction with isopropyl bromide; (iii) removal of the oxygen functions through tosylation and reduction; (iv) d

- Synthesis of (+/-)-trans-9,10-Epoxy-2-methyloctadecane, an Analogue of the Gypsy Moth Pheromone (Disparlure) and Related Epoxides
-
Starting from the ready available threo-aleuritic acid (2), (+/-)-trans-9,10-epoxy-2-methyloctadecane (1) has been prepared through the intermediate formation of a 9,10-isopropylidene-16-aldehyde followed by a Grignard reaction, reduction of the carbonyl function, removal of the hydroxyl groups and finally conversion of the glycol system into the epoxide. The preparation of cis- and trans-9,10-epoxy-16-iodohexadecanoic acids is also reported.
