- Synthesis, Characterization and Biological Evaluation of Schiff Base Transition Metal Complexes Derived from 4-Nitrobenzene-1,2-diamine and 5-Chloroisatin

A series of transition metal complexes of the type [MLX2], where M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), X = Cl–/CH3COO– and L = Schiff base derived from 4-nitrobenzene-1,2-diamine and 5-chloroisatin have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, molar conductance, IR, UV-visible, magnetic moments measurement, 1H & 13C NMR and mass spectral studies. On the basis of physico-chemical studies and spectral evaluation, an octahedral geometry have been proposed for all metal(II) complexes. The antimicrobial activity of ligand and its metal complexes have been additionally screened against bacteria and fungi. Metal(II) complexes show good activity as compared to ligand towards studied microorganisms and also metal complexes checked for their catalytic properties for benzoylation of phenol.

- Highly efficient oxidation of diphenylmethane to benzophenone employing a novel ruthenium catalyst with tert-butylhydroperoxide under mild conditions

The ruthenium complex Ru(bpbp)(pydic) (bpbp = 2,6-bis(1-phenylbenzimidazol- 2-yl), pydic = pyridine-2,6-dicarboxy acid) has been synthesized and testedin the selective oxidation of diphenylmethane tobenzophe-none utilizing tert-butylhydroperoxide as the terminal oxidant. The influence of various reaction parameters such as temperature, catalyst amount and nature of solvent on the activity and selectivity was evaluated. Diphenylmethane was converted with 94% conversion and 100% selectivity to benzophenone under the optimized reaction conditions, inwhich the turnover number (TON) of catalyst reached 94,000. Moreover, a plausible reaction mechanism through redox ruthenium species was proposed.

- Functional analysis of repositioned anilide derivatives as anticancer compounds

Off the different types cancers 40% of the population have been observed to be affected by leukemia. Contemporary therapeutics is focusing on generation of new synthetic analogues that can exert maximum positive physiological effect with minimum dosage and negligible deleterious side effects. New generation pharmacists are focusing on such promising effects of Imatinib (a potential anti-cancer drug molecule), Dasatinib, Pelitinib and Nilotinib. The present research study focuses on novel synthesized anilides derivative against BCR-ABL kinase as potential anti-leukemic agent. Validation of the compounds by molecular docking with specific BCR-ABL kinase confirmed their activity. Toxicity prediction of these compounds helped to identify sustainability as therapeutic molecules. The IC50 values were calculated (211 ug, 175 ug, 272ug for compounds A, B, C resp.) and the mode of cell death was gauged by DNA laddering assay. The cells were observed to be induced for programmed cell death. By validating and in-vivo testing of three synthesized compounds, the compound B was observed to be more stable thermodynamically with a potentially vital active site and appears to be a promising anti-leukemic factor. The present research thus lays a preliminary platform in world of pharmaceutics, where these new analogues appear to be efficient, target specific and less toxic molecules.

- Mechanically induced solvent-free esterification method at room temperature

Herein, we describe two novel strategies for the synthesis of esters, as achieved under high-speed ball-milling (HSBM) conditions at room temperature. In the presence of I2 and KH2PO2, the reactions afford the desired esterification derivatives in 45% to 91% yields within 20 min of grinding. Meanwhile, using KI and P(OEt)3, esterification products can be obtained in 24% to 85% yields after 60 min of grinding. In addition, the I2/KH2PO2 protocol was successfully extended to the late-stage diversification of natural products showing the robustness of this useful approach. - A solvent-reagent selection guide for Steglich-type esterification of carboxylic acids

The Steglich esterification is a widely employed method for the formation of esters under mild conditions. A number of issues regarding the sustainability of this transformation have been identified, chiefly the use of hazardous carbodiimide coupling reagents in conjunction with solvents with considerable issues such as dichloromethane (DCM) and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). To overcome these issues, we have developed a solvent-reagent selection guide for the formation of esters via Steglich-type reactions with the aim of providing safer, more sustainable conditions. Optimum reaction conditions have been identified after high-throughput screening of solvent-reagent combinations, namely the use of Mukaiyama's reagent (Muk) in conjunction with solvent dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The new reaction conditions were also exemplified through the synthesis of a small selection of building-block like molecules and includes the formation of t-butyl esters.

- Direct Amidation of Esters by Ball Milling**

The direct mechanochemical amidation of esters by ball milling is described. The operationally simple procedure requires an ester, an amine, and substoichiometric KOtBu and was used to prepare a large and diverse library of 78 amide structures with modest to excellent efficiency. Heteroaromatic and heterocyclic components are specifically shown to be amenable to this mechanochemical protocol. This direct synthesis platform has been applied to the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and agrochemicals as well as the gram-scale synthesis of an active pharmaceutical, all in the absence of a reaction solvent.

We report conversion of esters to thioestersviaselective C-O bond cleavage/weak C-S bond formation under transition-metal-free conditions. The method is notable for a general and practical transition-metal-free system, broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance. The strategy was successfully deployed in late-stage thioesterification, site-selective cross-coupling/thioesterification/decarbonylation and easy-to-handle gram scale thioesterification. Selectivity and computational studies were performed to gain insight into the formation of weak C-S bonds by C-O bond cleavage, which contrasts with the traditional trend of nucleophilic additions to carboxylic acid derivatives.

- Photochemical Activation of Aromatic Aldehydes: Synthesis of Amides, Hydroxamic Acids and Esters

A cheap, facile and metal-free photochemical protocol for the activation of aromatic aldehydes has been developed. Utilizing thioxanthen-9-one as the photocatalyst and cheap household lamps as the light source, a variety of aromatic aldehydes have been activated and subsequently converted in a one-pot reaction into amides, hydroxamic acids and esters in good to high yields. The applicability of this method was highlighted in the synthesis of Moclobemide, a drug against depression and social anxiety. Extended and detailed mechanistic studies have been conducted, in order to determine a plausible mechanism for the reaction.

- Photo-on-Demand Synthesis of Vilsmeier Reagents with Chloroform and Their Applications to One-Pot Organic Syntheses

The Vilsmeier reagent (VR), first reported a century ago, is a versatile reagent in a variety of organic reactions. It is used extensively in formylation reactions. However, the synthesis of VR generally requires highly toxic and corrosive reagents such as POCl3, SOCl2, or COCl2. In this study, we found that VR is readily obtained from a CHCl3 solution containing N,N-dimethylformamide or N,N-dimethylacetamide upon photo-irradiation under O2 bubbling. The corresponding Vilsmeier reagents were obtained in high yields with the generation of gaseous HCl and CO2 as byproducts to allow their isolations as crystalline solid products amenable to analysis by X-ray crystallography. With the advantage of using CHCl3, which bifunctionally serves as a reactant and a solvent, this photo-on-demand VR synthesis is available for one-pot syntheses of aldehydes, acid chlorides, formates, ketones, esters, and amides.

- Evaluation of Cyclic Amides as Activating Groups in N-C Bond Cross-Coupling: Discovery of N-Acyl-δ-valerolactams as Effective Twisted Amide Precursors for Cross-Coupling Reactions
-
The development of efficient methods for facilitating N-C(O) bond activation in amides is an important objective in organic synthesis that permits the manipulation of the traditionally unreactive amide bonds. Herein, we report a comparative evaluation of a series of cyclic amides as activating groups in amide N-C(O) bond cross-coupling. Evaluation of N-acyl-imides, N-acyl-lactams, and N-acyl-oxazolidinones bearing five- and six-membered rings using Pd(II)-NHC and Pd-phosphine systems reveals the relative reactivity order of N-activating groups in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. The reactivity of activated phenolic esters and thioesters is evaluated for comparison in O-C(O) and S-C(O) cross-coupling under the same reaction conditions. Most notably, the study reveals N-acyl-δ-valerolactams as a highly effective class of mono-N-acyl-activated amide precursors in cross-coupling. The X-ray structure of the model N-acyl-δ-valerolactam is characterized by an additive Winkler-Dunitz distortion parameter ?(τ+χN) of 54.0°, placing this amide in a medium distortion range of twisted amides. Computational studies provide insight into the structural and energetic parameters of the amide bond, including amidic resonance, N/O-protonation aptitude, and the rotational barrier around the N-C(O) axis. This class of N-acyl-lactams will be a valuable addition to the growing portfolio of amide electrophiles for cross-coupling reactions by acyl-metal intermediates.

- Hydrogen-bond-assisted transition-metal-free catalytic transformation of amides to esters

The amide C-N cleavage has drawn a broad interest in synthetic chemistry, biological process and pharmaceutical industry. Transition-metal, luxury ligand or excess base were always vital to the transformation. Here, we developed a transition-metal-free hydrogen-bond-assisted esterification of amides with only catalytic amount of base. The proposed crucial role of hydrogen bonding for assisting esterification was supported by control experiments, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and kinetic studies. Besides broad substrate scopes and excellent functional groups tolerance, this base-catalyzed protocol complements the conventional transition-metal-catalyzed esterification of amides and provides a new pathway to catalytic cleavage of amide C-N bonds for organic synthesis and pharmaceutical industry. An electrolytic method for the direct oxidative coupling of aldehydes with alcohols to produce esters is described. Our method involves anodic oxidation in presence of TBAF as supporting electrolyte in an undivided electrochemical cell equipped with graphite electrodes. This method successfully couples a wide range of alcohols to benzaldehydes with yields ranging from 70 to 90%. The protocol is easy to perform at a constant voltage conditions and offers a sustainable alternative over conventional methods.

- Oxidative esterification of alcohols by a single-side organically decorated Anderson-type chrome-based catalyst

The direct esterification of alcohols with non-noble metal-based catalytic systems faces great challenges. Here, we report a new chrome-based catalyst stabilized by a single pentaerythritol decorated Anderson-type polyoxometalate, [N(C4H9)4]3[CrMo6O18(OH)3C{(OCH2)3CH2OH}], which can realize the efficient transformation from alcohols to esters by H2O2oxidation in good yields and high selectivity without extra organic ligands. A variety of alcohols with different functionalities including some natural products and pharmaceutical intermediates are tolerated in this system. The chrome-based catalyst can be recycled several times and still keep the original configuration and catalytic activity. We also propose a reasonable catalytic mechanism and prove the potential for industrial applications.

- Carboxyboronate as a Versatile In Situ CO Surrogate in Palladium-Catalyzed Carbonylative Transformations

The application of carboxy-MIDA-boronate (MIDA=N-methyliminodiacetic acid) as an in situ CO surrogate for various palladium-catalyzed transformations is described. Carboxy-MIDA-boronate was previously shown to be a bench-stable boron-containing building block for the synthesis of borylated heterocycles. The present study demonstrates that, in addition to its utility as a precursor to heterocycle synthesis, carboxy-MIDA-boronate is an excellent in situ CO surrogate that is tolerant of reactive functionalities such as amines, alcohols, and carbon-based nucleophiles. Its wide functional-group compatibility is highlighted in the palladium-catalyzed aminocarbonylation, alkoxycarbonylation, carbonylative Sonogashira coupling, and carbonylative Suzuki–Miyaura coupling of aryl halides. A variety of amides, esters, (hetero)aromatic ynones, and bis(hetero)aryl ketones were synthesized in good-to-excellent yields in a one-pot fashion.

The mechanistic study shows that a peroxide intermediate is involved in this transformation, and in the case of diphenylmethanes, the sp3 C[sbnd]C bond is cleaved through the peroxide rearrangement, which might provides a new way to cleave relatively strong C[sbnd]C bond and be applied to more general C[sbnd]C bond activation.

- Site-Selective Acceptorless Dehydrogenation of Aliphatics Enabled by Organophotoredox/Cobalt Dual Catalysis

The value of catalytic dehydrogenation of aliphatics (CDA) in organic synthesis has remained largely underexplored. Known homogeneous CDA systems often require the use of sacrificial hydrogen acceptors (or oxidants), precious metal catalysts, and harsh reaction conditions, thus limiting most existing methods to dehydrogenation of non- or low-functionalized alkanes. Here we describe a visible-light-driven, dual-catalyst system consisting of inexpensive organophotoredox and base-metal catalysts for room-temperature, acceptorless-CDA (Al-CDA). Initiated by photoexited 2-chloroanthraquinone, the process involves H atom transfer (HAT) of aliphatics to form alkyl radicals, which then react with cobaloxime to produce olefins and H2. This operationally simple method enables direct dehydrogenation of readily available chemical feedstocks to diversely functionalized olefins. For example, we demonstrate, for the first time, the oxidant-free desaturation of thioethers and amides to alkenyl sulfides and enamides, respectively. Moreover, the system's exceptional site selectivity and functional group tolerance are illustrated by late-stage dehydrogenation and synthesis of 14 biologically relevant molecules and pharmaceutical ingredients. Mechanistic studies have revealed a dual HAT process and provided insights into the origin of reactivity and site selectivity.

- Tropolonate salts as acyl-transfer catalysts under thermal and photochemical conditions: Reaction scope and mechanistic insights

Acyl-transfer catalysis is a frequently used tool to promote the formation of carboxylic acid derivatives, which are important synthetic precursors and target compounds in organic synthesis. However, there have been only a few structural motifs known to efficiently catalyze the acyl-transfer reaction. Herein, we introduce a different acyl-transfer catalytic paradigm based on the tropolone framework. We show that tropolonate salts, due to their strong nucleophilicity and photochemical activity, can promote the coupling reaction between alcohols and carboxylic acid anhydrides or chlorides to give products under thermal or blue light photochemical conditions. Kinetic studies and density functional theory calculations suggest interesting mechanistic insights for reactions promoted by this acyl-transfer catalytic system.

- Synthesis, characterization, antioxidant evaluation, molecular docking and density functional theory studies of phenyl and naphthyl based esters

Two phenol based esters phenyl benzoate (OE1) and 1-naphthyl benzoate (OE2) were synthesized from phenol/1-naphthol and benzoyl chloride respectively. The structural elucidation of the synthesized compounds was accomplished by spectroscopic studies (FTIR, 1H NMR & GC-MS) and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. DPPH (2, 2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) free radical and hydrogen peroxide activities were performed to evaluate the antioxidant capabilities of the synthesized esters. The compounds (OE1 & OE2) showed DPPH scavenging activity in concentration dependent manner with IC50 values 605.6 μM and 1138.7 μM correspondingly. Similarly, in hydrogen peroxide assay, OE1 and OE2 exhibited moderate activity with IC50 values 1510.2 μM and 1069.4 μM respectively. Molecular docking of the compounds was carried out to predict their antioxidant binding mechanism against target protein using the MOE suite. The structure?activity relationship analysis showed that replacing the phenyl ring by naphthyl significantly influences their activity. Geometrical studies of the compounds have been performed by both semi-empirical and DFT methods; results reveal an excellent convergence of experimental and theoretical structural parameters. A detailed bonding investigation of each compound has been performed by NBO and Bader's AIM analysis to obtain inter and intramolecular interactions.

The aim of this study is to investigate the antioxidant, anticholinesterase and the antiproliferative activities of some chalcones, benzoyl and sulfonyl hydrazones. The antioxidant activity was studied by way of four complimentary assays and the anticholinesterase activity was studied using the Ellman method. The antiproliferative activity of the compounds was determined using a BrdU cell proliferation ELISA assay. Compound 32 (IC50: 15.58 ± 0.01 μg/mL) against the brain (C6) and 29 (IC50: 5.02 ± 0.05 μg/mL) against cervical (HeLa) cancer cell lines exhibited higher antiproliferative activity than the other compounds. Two sulfonyl hydrazone derivatives 45 and 47 exhibited very good antioxidant activity. The results of anticholinesterase activity indicated that nine compounds 3, 8, 10, 14, 24, 25, 27, 38, and 45 significantly inhibited acetylcholinesterase enzymes and thirty-three compounds 1–4, 7–14, 22–28, 32–41, 44–47 inhibited butyrylcholinesterase enzymes (BChE) more than galantamine. In addition, virtual screening methods based on ligand 45 having the best activity against BChE was used to define new human BChE inhibitors. The interactions of ligand 8 against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were also examined. Important key residues were determined and visualized on completion of the methodology. All calculations indicated the suitability of use of the molecular docking approach for understanding interaction mechanisms and crucial fragments of novel hit compounds such as the potential lead AChE and BChE inhibitor candidates.

- Design and Bioevaluation of Novel Hydrazide-Hydrazones Derived from 4-Acetyl-N-Substituted Benzenesulfonamide

Abstract: In this research, a series of hydrazine-hydrazone derivatives (Ia–g), (IIa–h) were synthesized to discover new antioxidant and anticholinesterase agents. The structures of synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic data using UV, IR, 1H, 13C NMR, mass spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The bio-evaluation of the synthesized compounds (Ia–g), (IIa–h) were evaluated according to in vitro activity assays. The results of β-carotene/linoleic acid assay showed that among the synthesized compounds, the (Ib), (Ie), (IIb–IIe), and (IIh) compound exhibited higher activity for the lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. In the DPPH free scavenging activity and the cation radical scavenging activity in ABTS?+ activity, compound (IIb) was found to be more active. In the CUPRAC reduced power assay, the A0.5 values of all synthesized compounds were better than α-TOC. In AChE assay, compound (IIb) exhibited the most activity with IC50 = 11.12 ± 0.74 μM, while the compounds (Ib–g) and (IIb–h), exhibited excellent activity than the positive standard galantamine (IC50 = 46.06 ± 0.10 μM) in the BChE assay.

- Palladium-catalyzed aryloxy- and alkoxycarbonylation of aromatic iodides in γ-valerolactone as bio-based solvent

Fossil-based solvents and triethylamine as a toxic and volatile base were successfully replaced with γ-valerolactone as a non-volatile solvent and K2CO3 as inorganic base in the alkoxy- and aryloxycarbonylation of aryl iodides using phosphine-free Pd catalyst systems. By this, the traditional systems were not simply replaced but also significantly improved. In the study, the effects of different reaction parameters, i.e. the use of several other solvents, the temperature, the carbon monoxide pressure, the base and the catalyst concentrations, were evaluated in details on the efficiency of the carbonylations. To gather some information on the mechanism of these reactions, the effects of the electronic parameters (σ) of various aromatic substituents of the aryl iodides as well as the influence of para-substitution of phenol were investigated on the activity. For a comparison, the aryl-substituted aryl iodides were also reacted with methanol and aryl iodide was also alkoxycarbonylated using several different lower alcohols. From the observed correlations between the electronic parameters of the aromatic substituents and the rates, it appears that the rate determining step is the oxidative addition of Ar–I to Pd0, provided that sufficient amounts of nucleophiles are present for the ester formation. If this is not the case, the rate of nucleophile attack might determine the overall rate.

- A Novel C–N Migration Rearrangement Based on N–F Compounds for the Synthesis of N-Alkyl Diaryl Ureas

A novel rearrangement reaction based on the structure of N-fluoro-N-(phenylsulfonyl) benzamides (FPSBA) was developed. In the presence of base, unsymmetrical N-alkyl diaryl ureas were obtained in good yields which were accomplished through secondary alkyl phenylamines initiated 1,2-phenyl-shift migration rearrangement of N-fluoro-N-(phenylsulfonyl) benzamides. The reaction was carried out without using traditional, highly toxic reagents and noble metals. Whereas without rearrangement occurrence for primary phenylamines and aliphatic amines, normal amides and N-(phenylsulfonyl) benzamides were afforded respectively. Nitrene and phenyl isocyanate included process were prevented and a secondary alkyl phenylamine initiated vicinal SN2' reaction occurred. This rearrangement reaction features an interesting reaction mechanism, mild reaction conditions, simple operation, and useful products.

An efficient synthetic route to benzyl phenyl ether preparation has been successfully developed via a one-pot synthetic protocol utilizing a combination of arylboronic acids, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and benzyl halides. The whole procedure consists of two consecutive reactions, formation of boron phenoxide from arylboronic acids and its nucleophilic attack. A simple operation under mild conditions such as room-temperature ionic liquid (choline hydroxide), aerobic environment, and absence of metal- and base-catalysts has been employed. Expansion to utilize benzyl surrogates was also successfully accomplished.

- Ester Transfer Reaction of Aromatic Esters with Haloarenes and Arenols by a Nickel Catalyst

A catalytic ester transfer reaction of aromatic esters with aryl halides/arenols was developed. The present reaction can transfer an ester functional group from certain aromatic esters to haloarenes. This ester transfer reaction involves two oxidative additions-one from the C-C bond of the aromatic ester and one from the C-halogen bond of haloarenes-onto a nickel catalyst. The utilization of a Ni/dcypt catalyst capable of cleaving both chemical bonds was a key for the reaction progress. Furthermore, naphthol-based aryl electrophiles were also applicable to the catalytic system via C-O bond activation.

The method provided by the invention has the advantages of less usage amount of the palladium catalyst, high catalytic activity of the palladium catalyst, stability of the palladium catalyst to air, simple operation, short reaction time and high atom economy, opens up a low-cost, green and efficient way for preparation of diaryl ester compounds, and has broad application prospects.

- Supramolecular Pd(II) complex of DPPF and dithiolate: An efficient catalyst for amino and phenoxycarbonylation using Co2(CO)8 as sustainable C1 source

Highly active, efficient and robust “dppf ligated tetranuclear palladium dithiolate complex” was synthesized and applied as a catalyst for chemical fixation of carbon monoxide for the synthesis value added chemicals such as tertiary amide and aromatic esters. The synthesized catalyst was characterized using different analytical techniques such as elemental analysis, 1H and 31P NMR spectroscopy. The use of Co2(CO)8 as a cheap, less toxic and low melting solid surrogate are additional advantages over the current protocol. The catalyst showed superior activity towards the Amino (10?3 mol % catalyst) and Phenoxycarbonylation (10-2 mol % catalyst) and high TON (104 to 103) and TOF (103 to 102 h-1). The Betol and Lintrin (active drug molecules) were synthesized under an optimized reaction condition. The scalability of the current protocol has been demonstrated up-to the gram level.

- Ligand-Controlled C?O Bond Coupling of Carboxylic Acids and Aryl Iodides: Experimental and Computational Insights

Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between carboxylic acids and aryl halides have several possible competitive pathways. Decarboxylative C?C bond coupling and C?H arylation are well established in the literature. However, direct C?O bond coupling between carboxylic acids and aryl halides has received little success. In this report, we describe a protocol for exclusive C?O bond formation, enabled by a bidentate N,N-ligand such as 1,10-phenanthroline. The reaction is general for a broad range of carboxylic acids and iodoarenes. Experimental evidence and computational results suggest a high energy barrier for the alternative pathway of decarboxylative carbon-carbon bond coupling. (Figure presented.).

The invention belongs to the field of drug synthesis and in particular relates to a method for preparing a carboxylate aryltype compound. The preparation method provided by the invention comprises thefollowing steps: providing a compound A of a formula a shown in the description, a compound B of a formula b shown in the description, an organic palladium complex, and a silver salt, wherein the organic palladium complex is composed of a palladium compound and a nitrogen-containing ligand; the nitrogen-containing ligand comprises an o-phenoline compound and/or a bipyridine compound; and mixing the compound A, the compound B, the organic palladium complex and the silver salt in a reaction solvent, and performing a reaction in an inert gas atmosphere, so as to obtain the carboxylate aryl typecompound of a formula I shown in the description. As the organic palladium complex and the silver salt are simultaneously used, direct selectivity C-O coupling of carboxylic acid and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbon is realized, and the method is applicable to a variety of carboxylic acid substrates and halogenated aromatic substrates, and is wide in compatibility and high in yield.

- MnO2?Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles as Efficient and Recyclable Heterogeneous Catalyst for Benzylic sp3 C?H Oxidation

Herein, we report a highly chemoselective and efficient heterogeneous MnO2?Fe3O4 MNP catalyst for the oxidation of benzylic sp3 C?H group of ethers using TBHP as a green oxidant to afford ester derivatives in high yield under batch/continuous flow module. This catalyst was also effective for the benzylic sp3 C?H group of methylene derivatives to furnish the ketone in high yield which can be easily integrated into continuous flow condition for scale up. The catalyst is fully characterized by spectroscopic techniques and it was found that 0.424 % MnO2?Fe3O4 catalyzes the reaction; the magnetic nanoparticles of this catalyst could be easily recovered from the reaction mixture. The recovered catalyst was recycled for twelve cycles without any loss of the catalytic activity. The advantages of MnO2?Fe3O4 MNP are its catalytic activity, easy preparation, recovery, and recyclability, gram scale synthesis with a TOF of up to 14.93 h?1 and low metal leaching during the reaction.

A site-selective supported palladium nanoparticle catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction with heteroaryl esters and arylboronic acids as coupling partners was developed. This methodology provides a heterogeneous catalytic route for aryl ketone formation via C(acyl)-O bond activation of esters by successful suppression of the undesired decarbonylation phenomenon. The catalyst can be reused and shows high activity after eight cycles. The XPS analysis of the catalyst before and after the reaction suggested that the reaction might be performed via a Pd0/PdII catalytic cycle that began with Pd0.

A facile, efficient and environmentally friendly methodology for the preparation of phenolic esters is realized via metal-free coupling of carboxylic acids and arylboronic acids. This sequential one pot reaction, employing methyl propiolate as an activating reagent, proceeds through the formation of enol ester intermediate, followed by a nucleophilic attack on the C-O bond under the oxidation of hydrogen peroxide. These studies display that enol esters, despite previously being overlooked as synthetic intermediates, would be the valuable building blocks for developing carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bond-forming reactions.

The first fluoride and palladium co-catalyzed conversion of amide to ester through an aerobic oxidative coupling pathway is reported. This new approach presents a practical process that employs easily available oxygen and commercially available arylboronic acids as coupling partners, uses a wide range of N- tosylamides, and proceeds under mild reaction conditions. This protocol demonstrates broad functional group tolerance, and provides an alternative option to synthesize esters from N-tosylamides which obtained by simply N-functionalization of secondary amides.

- Synthesis of phenyl esters using SiO2-SO3H catalyst in conventional heating and microwave-irradiated esterification processes

A SiO2-SO3H amorphous catalyst containing a small surface area of 115.0 m2g-1 and 1.32 mmol H+/g was prepared from fine construction sand and sodium carbonate and sulfonated with H2SO4. In a 10% (w/w) basis, it is very efficient for catalyzing the esterification of carboxylic acids with phenol. The reaction processes were performed using conventional heating and under microwave irradiation. The yields were higher in the microwave-irradiated esterification. The catalyst could be used for three esterification sequences in both processes.

- Selectivity in the photo-fries rearrangement of some aryl benzoates in green and sustainable media. Preparative and mechanistic studies

Irradiation of a series of p-substituted aryl benzoates under N2 atmosphere in homogeneous and micellar media was investigated by means of steady-state condition and of time-resolved spectroscopy. A notable selectivity in favor of the 2-hydroxybenzophenone derivatives was observed in micellar media. The benzophenone derivatives were the main photoproduct. On the other hand, in homogeneous media (cyclohexane, acetonitrile, and methanol) the observed product distribution was entirely different, viz. substituted 2-hydroxybenzophenones, p-substituted phenols, benzyl and benzoic acid were found. The binding constants in the surfactant were also measured and NOESY experiments showed that the aryl benzoates were located in the hydrophobic core of the micelle. Laser flash photolysis experiments led to the characterization of both p-substituted phenoxy radical and substituted 2-benzoylcyclohexadienone transients in homogeneous and micellar environment.

- Carbonylative Suzuki coupling and alkoxycarbonylation of aryl halides using palladium supported on phosphorus-doped porous organic polymer as an active and robust catalyst
-
Developing highly active catalysts with the combined advantages of molecular and solid catalysis is considered as the “Holy Grail” in the area of catalysis research. Herein, a phosphorus-doped porous polymer-immobilized palladium was successfully developed as an efficient, robust, and recyclable catalyst for the carbonylative Suzuki coupling and alkoxycarbonylation reactions of aryl halides. Rather than just as an immobilizing molecular catalyst, palladium supported on phosphorus-doped porous organic polymer exhibits even better catalytic performances than that of its analogue homogeneous catalysts in both carbonylation reactions. Moreover, the catalyst can be easily separated and reused for at least 5 times without significant loss in reactivity. Importantly, the catalyst was highly stable under carbonylation reaction conditions, and no palladium nanoparticle was observed even after the 5th reuse.

- Oxime palladacycle in PEG as a highly efficient and recyclable catalytic system for phenoxycarbonylation of aryl iodides with phenols

In this report, we have developed a sustainable protocol for the synthesis of aromatic esters by a carbonylative method using di-μ-chlorobis [5-hydroxy-2-[1-(hydroxyimino-?N) ethyl] phenyl-?C] palladium (II) dimer (1) catalyst in PEG-400 as a greener and recyclable solvent. The reaction is carried out at room temperature using CO in a balloon. Good to excellent yield of various esters can be synthesize using this protocol. Direct insertion of CO moiety leads to the high atom and step economy. Compared to previous protocol this phosphine free approach for the synthesis of aromatic esters provides high Turnover Number (TON) and Turnover Frequency (TOF). Developed approach has an alternative route for use of conventional palladium precursor with high conversion and selectivity. The catalyst system and product can easily be separated using diethyl ether as a solvent. The Pd/PEG-400 system could be reused up to a fifth consecutive cycle without any loss of its activity and selectivity.

- Base-Promoted Amidation and Esterification of Imidazolium Salts via Acyl C-C bond Cleavage: Access to Aromatic Amides and Esters

Imidazolium salts have been effectively employed as suitable acyl transfer agents in amidation and esterification in organic synthesis. The weak acyl C(O)-C imidazolium bond was exploited to generate acyl electrophiles, which further react with amines and alcohols to afford amides and esters. The broad substrate scope of anilines and benzylic amines and base-promoted conditions are the benefits of this route. Interestingly, phenol, benzylic alcohols, and a biologically active alcohol can also be subjected to esterification under the optimized conditions.

- Aldehydes as potential acylating reagents for oxidative esterification by inorganic ligand-supported iron catalysis

The oxidative esterification of various aldehydes with alcohols could be achieved by a heterogeneous iron(iii) catalyst supported on a ring-like POM inorganic ligand under mild conditions, affording the corresponding esters, including several drug molecules and natural products, in high yields. ESI-MS and control experiments demonstrated that POM-FeV(O) was the active catalytic species and the plausible mechanism was presented. More importantly, the 6th run of the iron catalyst recycles shows only a slight decrease in the yield.

- Aerobic Self-Esterification of Alcohols Assisted by Mesoporous Manganese and Cobalt Oxide

Aerobic self-esterification of primary alcohols catalyzed by mesoporous metal oxides (manganese and cobalt oxides) is reported under base and solvent free conditions. For a range of aliphatic alcohols, up to 90 % conversions to esters was achieved. The catalytic reaction is likewise applicable to neat aldehydes as substrates with yields of up to 86 %. High pressure batch reaction for ethanol to ethyl acetate led to 22 % yield. Isotope labeling studies indicated decarboxylation on the catalyst surface. Mechanistic and kinetic experiments implicate oxygen rebound and α-carbon removal as intermediate steps. Mesoporous cobalt oxide showed about 20 % higher catalytic activity compared to mesoporous manganese oxide.

Base-metal-catalyzed dehydrogenative cross-coupling of primary alcohols to form cross-esters as major products, liberating hydrogen gas, is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by a pincer complex of earth-abundant manganese in the presence of catalytic base, without any hydrogen acceptor or oxidant. Mechanistic insight indicates that a dearomatized complex is the actual catalyst, and indeed this independently prepared dearomatized complex catalyzes the reaction under neutral conditions.

- Highly-chemoselective step-down reduction of carboxylic acids to aromatic hydrocarbons: Via palladium catalysis

Aryl carboxylic acids are among the most abundant substrates in chemical synthesis and represent a perfect example of a traceless directing group that is central to many processes in the preparation of pharmaceuticals, natural products and polymers. Herein, we describe a highly selective method for the direct step-down reduction of carboxylic acids to arenes, proceeding via well-defined Pd(0)/(ii) catalytic cycle. The method shows a remarkably broad substrate scope, enabling to direct the classical acyl reduction towards selective decarbonylation by a redox-neutral mechanism. The utility of this reaction is highlighted in the direct defunctionalization of pharmaceuticals and natural products, and further emphasized in a range of traceless processes using removable carboxylic acids under mild, redox-neutral conditions orthogonal to protodecarboxylation. Extensive DFT computations were conducted to demonstrate preferred selectivity for the reversible oxidative addition and indicated that a versatile hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) pathway is operable.
