- Reaction between Magnesium and Titanium Alkoxides
-
Interactions in the Mg(OR)2-Ti(OR)4-ROH (R is Me, Et, or n-Bu) systems at 20°C are studied. A reaction, of Mg(OEt)2 or metallic magnesium with Ti(OEt)4 in ethanol prodces ethoxotitanates of variable composition MgTi(x)(OEt)(4x+2)*2EtOH, where x=1-4. An X-ray structural study of single crystals of composition MgTi2.35(OEt)11.4*2EtOH shows that the structure consists of molecules of four-edge shearing [(Ti,Mg)](OR)(x)(ROH)(y)] octahedra, which are similar to the known Ti4(OR)16 (R is Me or Et)tetramers. The nature of magnesium ethoxotitanates of variable composition is discussed. Magnesium and titanium methoxides do not react directly, but MeOH-insoluble magnesium methoxotitanates of variable compositioncan be prepared by the reaction of the appropriate ethoxotitanates withmethanol. In n-BuOH, magnesium oxobutoxotitanate of the ratio Mg:Ti=1:1is presumably formed.
