One of the products of the reaction of Cp(CO)2Mo≡Mo(CO)2Cp (Cp = η5-C5H5) with an excess of diphenylcarbodiimide is characterized by X-ray crystallography. The substance crystallizes in the space group P21/c with cell constants a = 14.123 (2) A?, b = 12.228 (1) A?, c = 12.772 (1) A?, β = 96.09 (1)°, and V = 2193.2 A?3. R is 0.023 for 3003 reflections (I > 4.5σ(I)). The structure is identified as Cp(CO)2Mo[μ-(η1:η2-C=NPh)]Mo(NPh)Cp (II) containing an unprecedented combination of a complexed phenylimido ligand and a η2, (σ + π)-bonded isocyanide bridge. Complex II undergoes a substitution reaction with excess P(OMe)3 to form Cp(CO)Mo[P(OMe)3]Mo(CNPh)Mo(NPh)Cp and a related compound in which the terminal imido ligand is replaced by an oxo ligand.
