Macleaya cordata extract is a green, pollution-free plant extract derived from the Macleaya cordata plant, which contains several alkaloids such as sanguinarine, chelerythrine, protopine, and allocryptopine. The main components, sanguinarine and chelerythrine, exhibit fungicidal and insecticidal activity. Sanguinarine, in particular, is a potent inhibitor of NF-kappaB activation, IkappaBalpha phosphorylation, and degradation. The extract has been shown to act as reversible inhibitors of the enzymatic hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine and is registered under the name of the fungicide Qwel (Camas Technologies Inc.). It also induces increased amounts of polyphenolic phytoalexines and systemic acquired resistance.
