550-74-3 Usage
Uses
Used in Chemical Analysis:
Picrolonic Acid is used as an analytical reagent for the detection and estimation of various elements, including alkaloids, tryptophan, phenylalanine, calcium, magnesium, lead, strontium, and thorium. Its ability to form practically insoluble complexes with calcium(II), lead(II), and thorium(IV) makes it particularly useful for the accurate determination of minute amounts of these metals.
Used in Spectrophotometric Determination:
Picrolonic Acid has also proved suitable for the spectrophotometric determination of calcium. When transformed by bromine water in an alkaline medium, it forms a red, water-soluble complex called calcium picrolonate. The absorption of this compound is constant for about two days and follows the Beer-Lambert Law, making it a reliable method for calcium analysis.
Used in the Isolation of Amines:
Picrolonic Acid serves as a reagent for the isolation of amines as crystalline π-complexes. This application is particularly useful in the field of organic chemistry, where the separation and identification of amines are crucial for various research and industrial processes.
Purification Methods
Crystallise picrolic acid from water or EtOH (solubility is 0.123% at 15o and 1.203% at 100o in H2O; and 1.107% at 0o and 11.68% at 81o in EtOH). It forms Ca, Cu Hg, Mg, Na, Sr, Pb and many other metal complexes [Maquestian et al Bull Soc Chim Belg 82 233 1973, Isaki et al. Chem Ber 74 1420 1941]. Check Digit Verification of cas no
The CAS Registry Mumber 550-74-3 includes 6 digits separated into 3 groups by hyphens. The first part of the number, starting from the left, has 3 digits, 5,5 and 0 respectively; the second part has 2 digits, 7 and 4 respectively.
Calculate Digit Verification of CAS Registry Number 550-74:
(5*5)+(4*5)+(3*0)+(2*7)+(1*4)=63
63 % 10 = 3
So 550-74-3 is a valid CAS Registry Number.
