    One of a class of cell-growth regulating metabolites (nucleotides) that enable bacteria to respond to metabolic and environmental changes. They are thought to act by controlling or affecting several biochemical reactions simultaneously, but the exact mechanism of their behavior has not been elucidated. One such nucleotide, discovered in 1982, is known as ZTP (5-amino-4-imidazole carboximide riboside-5′-triphosphate).See Nucleotide.
