(1) The introduction of an alkyl radical into an organic molecule. This was one of the early chemical processes used in Germany to furnish intermediates for improved dyes, e.g., dimethylaniline. Other alkylation products are cumene, dodecylbenzene, ethylbenzene, and nonylphenol.
