    Properties:
    White to yellowish, deliquescent crystals. Exists as double molecules Al2Br6 in the vapor. (1) D 3.01, mp 97.5C, bp 265C; (2) d 2.54, mp 93C (decomposes). Soluble in alcohol, carbon disulfide, or ether.
     
    Derivation:
    (1) By passing bromine over heated aluminum; (2) reaction of hydrogen bromide with aluminum hydroxide.
     
    Hazard:
    The anhydrous form reacts violently with water; corrosive to skin.
     
    Use:
    Anhydrous: bromination, alkylation, and isomerization catalyst in organic synthesis.
