    A compound belonging in the category of both salt and base because it contains OH (hydroxide) or O (oxide) as well as the usual positive and negative radicals of normal salts. Among the best examples are bismuth subnitrate, often written BiONO3, and basic copper carbonate, Cu2(OH)2CO3. Most basic salts are insoluble in water, and many are of variable composition.
