A compound belonging in the category of both salt and base because it contains OH (hydroxide) or O (oxide) as well as the usual positive and negative radicals of normal salts. Among the best examples are bismuth subnitrate, often written BiONO₃, and basic copper carbonate, Cu₂(OH)₂CO₃. Most basic salts are insoluble in water, and many are of variable composition.
