A type of thermometer in which the sensing element consists of two thin strips of metals having different expansion coefficients bonded together in a helical or spiral structure. The extent of deflection or bending induced by temperature change is indicated by a pointer on a dial. Reasonably accurate readings are obtained in this way, the range being from −185 to 425C.
