(Both forms identical) white, slightly hygroscopic powder; odorless; sweetish taste. Mp 170–172C; decomposes at 195–196C; specific rotation (5% aqueous solution) +28.2 (25C).Stable in air. Solutions have a pH of 7–9. Soluble in water and glycerol; insoluble in alcohol, chloroform, and ether.
