    A carbide characterized by great hardness, thermal stability, high melting point, and chemical resistance. Decomposed by fusion with alkali and attacked by mixtures of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. The best-known refractory carbides are those of silicon, boron, tungsten, and tantalum. Used as abrasives, furnace linings, and in other high-temperature applications. Some types are bonded.
