    A weak acid formed by reaction of carbon dioxide with water. Both organic and inorganic carbonates are formed from it by reaction with organic compounds or metals, respectively. Thus inorganic carbonates (CaCO3, K2CO3, Na2CO3, etc.) are salts of carbonic acid, and organic carbonates are esters of carbonic acid.
