    A process that imparts a hard surface to steel while the interior remains soft and tough. This is accomplished by heating the steel out of contact with air while packed in carbonaceous material, cooling it to black heat, reheating to a high temperature, and quenching. The materials are usually wood charcoal with sodium, potassium, or barium carbonates, cyanides, etc.
