Any of several compounds composed of carbon, fluorine, chlorine, and hydrogen, the best known of which are trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane. Their use was prohibited in 1979 except for a few specialized items because of their depleting effect on stratospheric ozone.
