Expansion of the pyrrole ring by heating with chloroform or other halogeno compounds in the alkaline solution. The intermediate dichlorocarbene, by addition to the pyrrole, forms an unstable dihalogenocyclopropane that rearranges to a 3-halogenopyridine.
