A chemical reaction in which two substances unite to form a third; the reacting substances may be elements or compounds, but the product is always a compound, e.g., Cu + Cl₂ → CuCl₂ and 2NH₃ + H₂SO₄ → (NH₄)₂SO₄. Polymerization is a special case of combination, where complex organic molecules of the same kind unite to form chains or clusters of high molecular weight. See Polymerization.
