A process for the manufacture of sulfuric acid and oleum in which the sulfur dioxide from combustion of sulfur, pyrites, or other sulfur sources is oxidized with air to sulfur trioxide by contact with a vanadium pentoxide catalyst. Most of the sulfuric acid produced in the U.S. is made by this process.See Sulfuric Acid.
