    An herbicide that removes leaves from trees and growing plants. They may be either organic or inorganic. Some examples: (organic) phenoxyacetic acids, trichloropicolinic acid, carbamates, and nitro compounds; (inorganic) arsenic compounds, cyanides, thiocyanates, and chlorates. Several of the more persistent types have been used in military operations. Many defoliants are toxic.See 2,4-D; 2,4,5-T; Agent Orange.
