    The extremely rapid, self-propagating decomposition of an explosive accompanied by a high-pressure-temperature wave that moves at 1000–9000 msec. May be initiated by mechanical impact, friction, or heat. Detonation is a characteristic of high explosives, which vary considerably in their sensitivity to shock, nitroglycerin being one of the most dangerous in this respect.See Explosive, High; Deflagration.
