Any of several organosoluble dyes used in plastics, printing inks, cosmetics, etc., as well as for polyester and other synthetic fibers. They are chemically related to disperse dyes. The solvents used are such chlorinated hydrocarbons as 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethylene, and perchloroethylene. Use of solvent dyes avoids the necessity of fine-grinding and gives ideal dispersion. (The term solvent dye is somewhat misleading, as it would apply equally well to dyes that are soluble in water.)
