(eV). An extremely small unit used in measuring the energy of electrons and other atomic constituents. It is the energy developed by an electron in falling through a potential difference of one V, equivalent to 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ J. The rupture of a carbon-to-carbon bond has been calculated to yield approximately 5 eV.
