A metal, alloy, plastic, or ceramic used in the fabrication of machinery and its components, structural shapes, chemical process equipment, castings, tools, instruments, drums, tanks, piping, ductwork, and auxiliary items (excluded are materials used chiefly as protective coatings or as components of alloys). Engineering materials are characterized by hardness, strength, machinability, dimensional stability, nonflammability, and resistance to corrosion, most acids, solvents, and heat.
