Descriptive of certain molecules that have no permanent structure but are constantly changing their shapes and arrangements. An example is the metal carbonyl Fe₃(CO)₁₂, in which, according to Dr. F. Albert Cotton, originator of the term, “carbonyl groups readily move from one iron atom to another through the rapid formation and dissolution of carbonyl bridges between iron atoms.”
