A fishery by-product consisting essentially of processed scrap from the filleting operation or from whole fish. In the dry process, the waste from cod, halibut, and haddock heads is disintegrated and dried. The oil and proteins are largely retained. In the wet process, the whole fish (chiefly menhaden and pilchard) are used. These are steam-cooked and run through a screw press to remove the oil. The resulting meal is then dried and packed. Its chief use is now for animal feeds and as a raw material for fish protein concentrate.
Hazard:
Flammable, strong tendency for spontaneous heating.
