Any material that results from an animal or vegetable source in past geologic ages and has been buried (compressed) in the earth. Examples are fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, coal, lignite), fossil waxes (ozocerite, montan), fossil resins (amber), and fossil woods partially preserved (petrified) by the action of silica.
