    A characteristic property of bacteria in reacting to a staining method developed by Gram around 1880. The bacteria are stained with crystalline violet, treated with Gram's solution, and again stained with safranine. If the dye is retained the bacteria are called Gram-positive, and vice versa.See Bacteria.
