Heat Exchanger

    Name:
    Heat Exchanger
    Detailed information:
A vessel in which an outgoing hot liquid or vapor transfers a large part of its heat to an incoming cool liquid; in the case of vapors, the latent heat of condensation is thus utilized to heat the entering liquid. The shell-and-tube type is widely used; here the hot liquid or vapor is contained in the shell while the cool liquid passes through the tubes, which are usually arranged in coils for maximum contact with the heat source. Heat exchangers are used in many chemical operations, e.g., evaporation and pulp manufacture, as well as to produce steam from the heat developed in nuclear reactors for power generation.See Evaporation; Heat Transfer.
