(1937– ). Born in Karcag, Hungary, Hershko won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 2004 for his pioneering work concerning the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. He received his M.D. in 1965 and his Ph.D in 1969 from the Hadassah Faculty of Medicine of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is currently a Distinguished Professor at the Rappaport Family Institute for Research in Medical Sciences at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology) in Haifa and Adjunct Professor of Pathology at New York University. In 2000 he received the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research.
