(1818–1892). A German organic chemist who studied under Liebig. While professor of chemistry at the Royal College of Chemistry in London, he did original research on coal-tar derivatives that later led him into a study of organic dyes. Perkin, who first synthesized the dye mauveine in England, was a student of Hofmann. When the latter returned to Germany he continued his work in the field of dyes, which became the basis of German leadership in synthetic dye manufacture that continued until World War I.
