Solvent extraction of coal (containing up to 5% sulfur) under hydrogen pressure with the use of a catalyst such as zinc chloride; pressures from 1000–2000 psi are necessary for suitable conversion. This process offers a means of deriving fuel oil and petrochemical feedstocks directly from coal.
