The oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to acids and ketones by the addition of the calculated amount of chromic anhydride in dilute sulfuric acid to a solution of the alcohol in acetone. This procedure does not attack triple bonds or shift double bonds into conjugation with the ketone formed in the oxidation.
