    (1917–1997). An English molecular biologist who won the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1962 with Perutz. His work verified Pauling's earlier thesis concerning the α-helix structure of the polypeptide chain. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cambridge, he was science advisor to the allied air commander-in-chief during World War II. He was also editor of the journal Molecular Biology.
