    (1881–1957). An American physical chemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1932 for his fundamental research in surface chemistry, especially monomolecular films. This led to development of modern knowledge of emulsification and detergency. Langmuir also investigated electrical discharges in gases and did pioneer work on cloud-seeding techniques.
