Magnesium oxide, MgO, as obtained from seawater, seawater bitterns, or well brines. The preliminary product is usually magnesium hydroxide or chloride, which is then heated, or sometimes treated with steam and heated in the case of the chloride, to obtain the oxide. Synthetic magnesite constitutes the purer grades of dead-burned magnesite.
