Mannheim Furnace

    Name:
    Mannheim Furnace
    Detailed information:
A muffle furnace used for the manufacture of salt cake and hydrogen chloride. It consists of a firebrick compartment in which is a circular pan some 10–15 ft in diameter, usually made of cast iron. The charge is fed through a hopper at the top and plows maintain continuous movement of the materials being heated. The temperature of the hydrogen chloride gas evolved is approximately 145C. Salt cake is removed through an opening at the side. The furnace is run continuously. The Mannheim furnace is no longer widely used because most salt cake is now obtained from natural sources.
