(1) The divalent hydrocarbon group ⁻CH₂—, in which the carbon atom has its normal valence of 4; it is derived from methane by dropping two hydrogen atoms. It occurs in many organic compounds, e.g., methylene chloride (dichloromethane), CH₂Cl₂. (2) See Carbene.
