Properties:
White, crystalline powder. Mp approximately 210C (decomposes). Soluble in water; insoluble in alcohol. Combustible.
Derivation:
Oxidation of lactose or similar carbohydrates with nitric acid.
Use:
Substitute for tartaric acid, sequesterant for metal ions (calcium, iron), retards hardening of concrete intermediate for synthesis of heterocyclic compounds (pyrroles).
