    Yellowish-white crystals. (1) d 1.494, mp 140–141C; (2) d 1.575, mp 147.7C; (3) d 1.5497, mp 238C. (1) Soluble in alcohol and ether; slightly soluble in water; (2) soluble in water, alcohol, and ether; (3) soluble in alcohol, sparingly soluble in water. Combustible.
     
    Derivation:
    (1) Nitration of benzoic acid; (2) oxidation of o-nitrotoluene with MnO2 and sulfuric acid, (3) oxidation of p-nitrotoluene by hot chromic acid mixture.
     
    Use:
    (1) Dye intermediate, reagent for alkaloids; (2) and (3) organic synthesis.
