A test that does not involve destruction of the sample or material tested. Such tests are usually carried out by radiographic methods on large, finished metal products (castings and machine components) to determine the presence of internal defects likely to cause operational failure. An infrared camera scanning device for detection of internal weaknesses in tires is a recent development in nondestructive testing. X-radiation is used to determine the authenticity of paintings and other objects of art.See testing.
