(1897–1978). An English physical chemist who was recipient of the Nobel Prize in 1967 with Eigen and Porter. His analysis of reactions of one ten-billionth of a second were made possible by disturbing the chemical equilibrium with short energy pulses. After receiving a doctorate, he went to the Sorbonne before returning to Cambridge to teach. His career was long and distinguished by many awards.
